While not officially part of the exhibition grounds, Old Montreal will serve in a supporting role.
Background
Old Montreal is the city’s most recognised historical section and a source of substantial tourist income.
Issues
Gridlock, noise, and reduced air quality caused by motor vehicles are compromising the charm of Old Montreal and negatively affecting tourism.
Expo 17 Use
The creation of a car-free zone and the installation of a mass transit system, the Expo Express, will allow fairgoers easy access to accommodation, entertainment, and additional cafés and restaurants. Visitors will be encouraged to explore the area and discover the character of the host city.
Long Term Use
The car-free zone will be retained, allowing residents and visitors to experience this historical area as it was before the advent of the automobile.

The Expo Express and the AquaTram will link Old Montreal directly with Expo 17.
A modern light rail system would service Old Montreal, Pointe Saint-Charles, and the islands.
